Welcome To The Artful Lodger

Locally Owned & Operated Since 1992

We welcome you to this Victorian Style home which was built by the prominent Newport King Family during the Civil War Era circa 1850's. Legend has it that it was built as an extra guest house for spill over from the many mansion parties of the Gilded Age. Located in the heart of Newport's Historic Downtown, the Artful Lodger is convenient walking distance to most of Newport's best known attractions.

The Artful Lodger serves a full gourmet breakfast in our conservatory which offers spectacular views of Newport Harbor. Our lovingly restored Victorian Inn provides private baths, air conditioning, free WiFi and off-street parking. Our luxurious suites feature jacuzzis and fireplaces to pamper you and induce deep relaxation. Please come stay with us, we can't wait to meet you!

Victorian Inn History

The building has been a Bed & Breakfast since 1992. The year 2017 marked the 25th anniversary of The Artful Lodger Inn and corresponded to the 205th anniversary of our “literary patron saint” Charles Dickens. The original owners (now retired) Ric & Rory Ranucci, both performing musicians, acquired the Inn in 1992, they embarked upon the project that continues to this day.

Meet Maggie

Our Magnolia Tree "Maggie" is nearly two centuries old, it is registered with the National Registry of Historic Trees.

Our beautiful grounds were started by owners Ric and Rory. There are 3 different seating areas, one on the front porch overlooking Spring Street, the one near our patio on the side of the building has been a Newport in Bloom award winner, and our most recent addition under the Magnolia tree is our little lilly pond. Please enjoy!

Innkeeper, A Native Newporter

Artful Lodger Innkeeper and resident chef, Philemon Hadley, has degrees in Hospitality Management, Business Management and Tibetan Buddhism. He has traveled across the United States and to Nepal and India, working in fine dining restaurants, inns and hotels, while in pursuit of abiding passions, eastern philosophy, business management and culinary arts.

A native Newporter, Phil follows the dictum, "we work well together, we live well together", an attitude of genuine congeniality that owners, Rory and Ric Ranucci, recognize as an attitude that makes Artful Lodger guests feel welcome and special. His daily goal, along with staff, April, Megan, Natalie, the aunts and Ezra, is to keep the inn fresh, the full breakfasts, exquisite in taste and presentation, in an ambiance of Victorian Newport.
